"Karma is Real": Iran launches a bold missile and drone strike on terrorist bases within Pakistan, coinciding with the Pakistani PM's meeting with Iranian FM in Davos, sparking intense diplomatic fallout, raising critical questions about regional security

Formed in 2012, Jaish al-Adl, designated as a "terrorist" organization by Iran, is a Sunni terrorist group that operates in Iran's southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan, Al Arabiya News reported.

In a significant military operation, Iran has launched an attack on the bases of a terrorist group within the territorial borders of Pakistan. This bold move by Iran involved the use of drones and missiles to target the headquarters of Jaish al-Adl, a group identified as a terrorist organization by Iran. The timing of this operation is particularly noteworthy as it coincided with a high-profile meeting between the Pakistani Prime Minister and the Iranian Foreign Minister in Davos.

According to Al Arabiya News, as cited by Tasnim News Agency, two "important headquarters" of Jaish al-Adl in Pakistan were "destroyed." The strikes focused on a specific area in Pakistan's Balochistan region, which housed "one of the largest headquarters" of Jaish al-Adl. This strategic location, now targeted by Iran, highlights the group's significant presence in the area.

Jaish al-Adl, established in 2012, has been active in Iran’s southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan. This Sunni terrorist group has been a persistent security challenge for Iran, launching numerous attacks against Iranian forces over the years. These activities have led Iran to label the group as a terrorist entity, reflecting the severity of the threat it poses to the country's security.

One of the most notable incidents involving Jaish al-Adl occurred in December, when the group claimed responsibility for an attack on a police station in Sistan-Baluchistan. This attack resulted in the tragic loss of at least 11 police personnel, as reported by Al Arabiya News. This incident not only underscores the group's capability to carry out significant attacks but also the grave security challenges faced by Iran in its southeastern region.

Sistan-Baluchistan, a province located at the critical juncture where Iran meets Afghanistan and Pakistan, has a long history marked by numerous challenges. This region, as reported by Al Arabiya News, has been a hotspot for clashes involving Iran's security forces. The adversaries in these conflicts are primarily Sunni terrorists and drug smugglers, indicating a complex security landscape. This area is not only significant for its strategic location but also for the unique demographic and socio-economic dynamics it presents.

The province is one of the poorest regions in Iran, a fact that adds layers of complexity to the existing security challenges. Most of the population in Sistan-Baluchistan comprises Sunni ethnic Baluchis. This demographic aspect is crucial as it points to not just economic hardships but also potential sectarian and ethnic dimensions to the conflicts and issues faced in the region.

In a development that adds an international dimension to these local challenges, the missile attacks inside Pakistan's territory coincided with a high-profile diplomatic meeting. These strikes occurred while Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar Kakar was engaged in discussions with Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos. The timing of these attacks, simultaneous with such a significant diplomatic event, is particularly noteworthy, hinting at the complex interplay of local and international politics.

Adding to the regional tensions, these long-range missile attacks by Iran were preceded by another significant military action. Just a day earlier, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran had targeted areas near the US consulate in Erbil, located in Iraq’s Kurdistan region. Iran's justification for these strikes was that the targets were Israeli spy bases, revealing the multi-faceted nature of Iran's military engagements in the region. Furthermore, Iran's military actions have extended to targeting ISIS terrorist bases in Syria, illustrating a broad and aggressive stance against various perceived threats across the region.

Pakistan ‘Strongly Condemns’ Iran’s Missile Strike

In response to Iran’s recent missile strike on Jaish al-Adl, which occurred within its borders, Pakistan has expressed strong disapproval and condemnation. The Pakistani government has described this action as an 'unprovoked violation' of its airspace and territory, illustrating the severity with which it views this incident. The situation is further aggravated by the reported casualties: two children lost their lives, and three girls were injured as a result of the missile strike. This tragic loss of life and the harm to civilians have intensified Pakistan's response, highlighting the grave humanitarian implications of the strike.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan issued a statement to articulate its stance on this matter. The statement reads: “Pakistan strongly condemns the unprovoked violation of its airspace by Iran and the strike inside Pakistani territory which resulted in the death of two innocent children while injuring three girls. This violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty is completely unacceptable and can have serious consequences.” This strong language underscores Pakistan's view of the strike as not just a breach of its territorial integrity but also a matter that could potentially escalate into more serious consequences. The emphasis on the impact on innocent civilians, particularly children, adds a poignant and urgent tone to Pakistan’s condemnation.

Moreover, Pakistan expressed additional concern over the timing and manner of the strike. The statement points out: “It is even more concerning that this illegal act has taken place despite the existence of several channels of communication between Pakistan and Iran.” This part of the statement suggests that Pakistan views the strike as a breakdown in diplomatic communications and protocols. The mention of "several channels of communication" implies that there were existing means to address any issues or conflicts between the two nations, which were bypassed by Iran’s direct military action.

The diplomatic tensions between Pakistan and Iran have escalated following the recent missile strike by Iran on Jaish al-Adl within Pakistani territory. Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has released a statement detailing the steps taken in response to this incident, emphasizing the gravity of the situation and Pakistan's firm stance on the matter.

The statement from Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs declares, “Pakistan’s strong protest has already been lodged with the concerned senior official in the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tehran.” This action signifies Pakistan's immediate and formal objection to the strike. By lodging a strong protest with a senior official, Pakistan has taken a significant diplomatic step, signaling its serious concerns about Iran's actions and their implications for bilateral relations.

The statement further details additional diplomatic measures taken by Pakistan: “Additionally, the Iranian Charge d’affaires has been called to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to convey our strongest condemnation of this blatant violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and that the responsibility for the consequences will lie squarely with Iran.” By summoning the Iranian Charge d’affaires, Pakistan is taking a direct and assertive approach to express its disapproval and to hold Iran accountable for the consequences of the strike. This step is a clear indication of Pakistan's stance on protecting its sovereignty and its expectation of accountability from Iran.

Pakistan also expressed a broader concern regarding the impact of such actions on bilateral relations: “Such unilateral acts are not in conformity with good neighborly relations” and can “seriously undermine bilateral trust and confidence.” This part of the statement reflects a deep concern about the deterioration of the relationship between the two countries due to Iran's actions. Pakistan emphasizes the importance of mutual respect and adherence to international norms in maintaining good relations between neighbors.

The statement concludes with a significant international context: It notes that Iran had recently joined BRICS and mentions the recent visit of Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar to Iran, where he met with the Iranian foreign minister and President. This context is important as it situates the incident within the larger framework of regional and international politics. Iran's increasing engagement with international organizations like BRICS and its interactions with other regional powers like India are critical factors in understanding the geopolitical dynamics at play. The timing of the missile strike amidst these developments adds a layer of complexity to the situation, influencing how it is perceived and responded to by other nations in the region and beyond.
