Hindutva activist stabbed over Nupur Sharma row in Madhya Pradesh by suspected Islamists

A young man was injured after he was attacked by a group of people armed with sharp-edged weapons for allegedly expressing support for former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma in Madhya Pradesh’s Agar Malwa district on Wednesday, officials said.

The victim Ayush Jadam is a local convener of the Hindutva outfit, ‘Bajrang Dal’, and had purportedly given some statements in support of Ms. Sharma, who was suspended by the BJP last month following a row over her remarks against Prophet Muhammad. Mr. Jadam said the attack was a fallout of a media statement he had given in support of Ms. Sharma. The attack had a clear intention to murder Jadam in a very Jihadi style.

In a statement, Ayush said that during the fatal attack, the Islamists threatened to behead him for supporting Nupur Sharma. Ayush also added that he suspected someone was following him for some days but did not pay much attention to it. “They surrounded me and attacked with sharp weapons. They were saying, ‘cut him into pieces’. I was lucky there was a group of people passing by, and the attackers ran away after seeing them.”

Ayush is now being treated in a Ujjain Hospital and reportedly out of danger.

Following a complaint, the police filed a case against 13 people for the attack on the man identified as Ayush Jadam, 25, and arrested two of the accused, police said.

Agar Malwa’s Superintendent of Police (SP) Rakesh Sagar told PTI that the complainant in the case has claimed Jadam was attacked for supporting Sharma, whose controversial comments about Prophet Mohammad during a TV debate in May had kicked up a huge controversy.

It is a matter of investigation if the victim had indeed supported Sharma and in what manner, he added.

The police arrested two of the accused in the case and a search was on to nab the others, Sagar said.

Jadam sustained head injuries in the assault, the police officer said.

Following the stabbing incident, Bajrang Dal and other right-wing outfits staged a sit-in outside the local Superintendent of Police’s office and demanded swift action against the accused. The police officer said the incident had caused some tension in the area but things were under control after barricades were put up.

As per the details given by the victim’s father, Ankit Jha along with his friend had gone to the Bajar for buying some Paan. On reaching the shop, he started to watch a video related to Nupur Sharma’s popular view of Prophet Mohammad.

There he was interrupted by Mohammad Behal, Mohammad Neha, and his other friends and they forcefully stopped the video and stabbed him six times.

The victim, identified as Ankit Jha of Bahera village, a Muslim-dominated area, is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Darbhanga. His condition was said to be critical.

The victim’s father said that his son has no personal enmity with the accused.

“He was watching the video on his phone when all the accused came and stopped the video. They fanned cigarette smoke on his face. When he reacted, one of them stabbed him six times on his waist”, Ankit’s father told Neo Politico.

FIR after removing Nupur’s remarks

The father has also reported that police had pressurized him to remove Nupur’s video remark from the complaint.
